A 16-year-old opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, October 15, killing three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and a teacher, police said, the Associated Press reports. A 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were critically injured. A community member shot and killed the attacker, police said.
The Bend-La Pine school district closed its schools for several days, and Gov. Tina Kotek spoke at a vigil that night in Drake Park. Police said the motive remained unclear. The state's emergency management office and local groups organized counseling for students and families.
