U.S. and Iran Trade Strikes Again as Their Ceasefire Breaks Down

U.S. forces struck about 90 targets in Iran for a second night, and Iran fired missiles and drones toward U.S. bases in Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar. Each side accused the other of breaking their deal.

The United States and Iran exchanged strikes overnight into Thursday, July 9, for a second straight night, hours after President Trump said he believed their ceasefire was over. Both governments accused the other of violating the terms of the deal they signed in mid-June.

U.S. Central Command said its forces struck about 90 targets in Iran, including missile and drone storage sites, with explosions reported in cities along the Strait of Hormuz, Just Security's daily summary reports, citing the Associated Press and The New York Times. Iran's military said it responded with drone and missile strikes on U.S. bases in Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar; Kuwait said its air defenses intercepted missile and drone attacks, and air raid sirens sounded in Bahrain. Iran's health ministry said U.S. strikes over the two days had killed at least 14 people and wounded 78.

A U.S. official said technical talks between the two countries would continue. The renewed fighting came as the International Monetary Fund warned that the war was weighing on the global economy.
